Kenya after Westgate: more trouble ahead –

imageSeptember 27, 2013 – What does the appalling attack on people at the Westgate Shopping Centre signify? Does it mean that Al Shabaab is getting stronger or weaker? Was it a show of strength, striking at a multinational target in the heart of Nairobi, or a desperate if spectacular attack on civilians at an easy, poorly-protected target? Is this the new Shabaab or was it an Al Qaeda operation using the Shabaab brand name?

Some of these questions may be answered if the Israeli Mossad interrogators get the surviving attackers to talk. Unlike Western interrogators, the Isrealis are not constrained in the methods they use.

Inspired by the Saudi Wahabist interpretation of Islam – ascetic, extreme, exclusive and violent – Al Qaeda feeds on despair rather than hope. It operates like the mafia, growing rich by terrifying wealthy Arabs into paying protection money. It transformed traditional Somali society by killing local imams or forcing them to abandon their traditional Sufi practices and Somali customs. For example, traditionally Somali women dressed in colourful flowing robes and played prominent social roles. Now they are dressed head to toe in black, dark brown or green and excluded from decision-making and debate.

200 Maalmood oo u Buuxsantey inta Ciidamada Gumeysiga Kenya ku jiraan Gudaha Soomaaliya

Iyo Ciidamada Gumeysiga Itoobiya oo ayaguna ku jira Soomaaliya in ka badan 124-maalmood

  • Moment Media Group | May 2, 2012

Ciidamada gumeysiga Kenya waxay ka gudbeen xad beenaadka NFD bishii October 16, 2011, ayagoo intii ka dambeysey deggaanada goboladda Jubooyinka iyo kuwa laolloga ahba ka geystey duqayn isugu jirta madaafiicda noocyadeeda kala duwan iyo duqayn hawada oo ay ku waxyeeleeyeen shacab Soomaaliyeed oo aan waxba galabsan.

Dagaalka Kenya ayaa salka ku haya khayraadka xeebta la ollogga ah Raaskambooni oo ay muddo dheer Kenya ku taameysey sidii ay Soomaalida uga durkin lahayd aaggaas, ayadoo hore isugu dayday in ay arrintaas ka sharciyaysato xukuumadda Sheikh Shariif, laakiin ay shacabka Soomaaliyeed iyo xildhibaanada Baarlamaanku ay gaashaanka u daruureen. Kaddibna ay markaas Kenya adeegsatey cudud militari oo ay kaga gudubtey xad-beenaadka NFD.

In ka badan 200 maalmood kaddib ayaysan muuqan in ciidamada gumeysiga Kenya ay ka baxayaan ciidda Soomaaliyeed, maadaama aysan jirin xukuumada Soomaaliyeed oo u danayneysa shacabkeeda oo la xisaabtami karta Kenya.

Is President Sheikh Sharif Competent Enough to Lead War-Torn Somalia?

April 27,2012 – As a young Somali university student still struggling to make it in life, I know how this article could be misinterpreted by those with low mental caliber to label me as an uncouth young man. I’m however not bothered because somebody has to ask some of these tough questions. If you are one of those that would prefer to be led by an incompetent, corrupt and incapable individual, I suggest you don’t read this. Unfortunately, these bunch of blind supporters have resorted to tribal and religious insinuations that are further used to dumb down the citizen of this great nation and deny us our ability to think through the decisions we make in our everyday lives. That said, if you are sailing on the same boat like me and would prefer genuine and competent leadership then maybe you should read on and come up with the other questions.

Somalia Draft Constitution: An instrument for balkanization and brutalization of Somalia

Somalia, Museveni, and militarising the region

April 29, 2012 – This continuation of a conversation between The Independent’s Andrew Mwenda and Mubatsi A. Habati and leading political philosopher, Prof. Mahmood Mamdani, focuses on regional issues.

Prof. Mamdani, Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia and Burundi have troops in Somalia. It is the first time Kenya has troops in a foreign country. What do you think are the implications of militarisation of the region?

Let us step back a little to understand the basic problem with the present strategy which is looking for a military solution in Somalia. The problem becomes clear if you look at Northern Uganda.

One of the biggest achievements of NRM was the use of a broad-base government for those who would give up armed struggle. Even leaders, not just remnants from the Idi Amin regime, but of the Obote II and Okello administrations, were welcome in the broad-base. But the NRM closed the door when it came to the political north. They refused a political solution when it came to the leadership of Alice Lakwena and Joseph Kony. The north could have its representatives in parliament but the NRM insisted that the solution for the region must be military. Uganda’s challenge today lies in finding a political solution to the Kony problem. Even when Kony has no more than a few hundred fighters around him, the LRA has become a justification for the entry of US forces in the region, leading to its militarisation.
